Processing poultry at home saves money and lets you control what your family eats. That freedom turns into drudgery, though, when you’re spending all weekend rotary-cutting chicken breasts by hand. The difference between that and having a good time with your family isn’t money. It’s the right tool in your hands.
At Uketap, we designed our tools to be a joy to use. That’s why they aren’t sold at big hardware stores or online catalogs. They’re in the ukeetap tools family because they’re customized for a specific need: turning a long, tedious task into something you actually look forward to doing. If it sounds like an unusual goal, it’s not. When you spend less time struggling, you gain more of the life you’d forgotten this work could give you.
You already have a knife
The instant you finish reading this sentence, go grab the best knife in your kitchen. How does it feel? If it’s okay enough for most of your cooking tasks, why can’t you find a way to use it on poultry? You often can. But as soon as your hands start slipping or cutting uneven strips instead of trim, sharp pieces, it’s clear that knives can only do some jobs well.
You also already have fits of frustration
When raw or cooked meat is dangling off your counter and falling onto the floor, when the whole dish is going to be ruined because you can’t even cut decently-sized strips without balled-up hand cramps… What do you do then? To stop raising your voice and saying things that you instinctively know are never going to make your partners laugh, there’s nothing quite like petroleum-based encroachment on your hobbyist agricultural lifestyle.
Okay. Truthfully, let me tell you that’s not true at all. There are three things that save your temper when home processing meat.
Economize by maximizing waste goes against basic safety practices
- A mountain of blocks with bone has been sold to make people think they’re making savings. Food safety researchers warn against exactly this scenario—stockpiling is bad for two reasons: 1) if problems develop with one block in a pile, they spread to all associated blocks; 2) people are trick themselves into thinking they love cooking more than they really do just because they spent so much money “saving” it.
- The largest companies rely on this mistake as an easier way of selling their product than making their product better for people who need to use it
- In practice, though, pieces that large need further processing which means time and energy mindlessly used (and tools carelessly blocked from useful work), when it would be better to control a small amount of product carefully committed to process.
When you raise chickens yourself or buy whole chickens from local providers who conduct humane slaughter and care about sustainable land practices, small batches of meat usually sit in the group freezer —because otherwise cooking for five hungry kids would mean eating chicken every night this week if they’re all full grown but smaller pieces get eaten faster between everyone else’s eating habits and leftovers don’t linger long enough to pose any food safety issues. Whole packages cannot get managed so easily through meal planning.
It doesn’t even matter which type of cutter you choose
The leap from manual shredding is so vast no one needs fine distinctions in how tools do their job. Such distinguishing factors even slow down the meatshredding experience frequently when owners select a tool that is heavy-duty to handle thick slices in case other types come in handy later but never actually use those listed abilities and stay mired in over-engineered maintenance work because every week brings new products attached to older models based at least partially on how customers get locked in by supporting older models’ niche weirdnesses.
The difference between brands of speakers means one model might sound clearer while another gets louder before breaking down but nobody cares when their neighbors call the police during their favorite weekly movie night. And worse yet are low-cost models bought out of necessity and then collected constantly afterward with no immediate plan because people will always need such convenience until next month’s paycheck stretches successfully in spite of deductible increase rates combined with steadily inflating insurance premium costs affecting patient care standards nationwide just like across-the-board consumer-package-x trends.](https://ukeetap.org/chicken-shredders)
The easy way starts with slowing down
From personal experience designing kitchen tools and decades helping people buy gear appropriate for their homes (and from farmers who buy equipment intended never leave the farmyard during its lifespan while knowing what works best regardless), I can tell you what matters most isn’t tool features but how well adapted these may prove towards workflows.
- The size of chicken feet can tip up beyond six inches practically overnight causing pre-grill drying faster while frustration sets right on cue alongside unfinished yardwork plans due minimal attention paid selecting better footwear withstand moisture absorption optimal performance solving problems instead leaving them behind gather momentum future difficulties later
- The boat doesn’t sink unless too many people try jumping to shore at once
